Notes on Grape Variety
Famoso is an indigenous white grape that despite its name “famous” is very less known.
The first documents where Famoso appears are dated back to 1437. However beginning of 1900, this variety disappeared completely.
It was rediscovered in early 90’s in the small village of Montesasso, Mercato Saraceno town ( province of Cesena), studied and identified as Famoso by the university of Bologna. The original vineyard was planted next to the ancient Montesasso church where the wine was served for the religious ceremonies.
In early 2000 this aromatic grape started to be re-cultivated by many farmers in Romagna region, who recognize its great value and uniqueness.
In 2022, Mercato Saraceno secured the appellation of Romagna DOC Famoso Mercato Saraceno
